CIO should not mean “Career is over”
Increasing dependency on technology for any business to survive, compete and prosper has challenged the CIOs to their wits. Thos CIOs who have kept themselves confined to technology domains are already reduced to technical managers and do not find their place in board rooms. For those, who questioned the business in their process and helped them work better processes through technology have grown to come close to the CEOs.
Technology is fast becoming commoditized and it is now not necessary for the CIO to be a technology geek any more. Someone who is aware and willing to go extra mile in working with business would be a good CIO.
The sheer need for the CIO to deeply understand the business they work for, in order to provide technology services gives them inherent advantage of being more aware and knowledgeable. Added with skills of sales and marketing, a good CIO would have everything to propel him to be the next CEO.
For all those, who decide to keep their technology hat on the top, CIO would mean “Career is over”.
